Laboratory of Plant Physiology, University of Groningen - The Netherlands

Groningen University

The Laboratory of Plant Physiology participates in the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) of the University of Groningen and studies the interaction between plant and environment. The adaptive and stress responses of plants to changes in the environment can be molecular, biochemical, biophysical, physiological and/or developmental modifications.

In 2004, a new project started on the ecophysiology of sea ice microalgae. Sea ice can be a significant source of the climate-active gas dimethyl sulphide (DMS). In this project the spatial and temporal distribution of DMS and its precursor DMSP are studied as well as mechanisms that control the production and conversion of DMS.

The project is done in close cooperation with the Department of Ocean Ecosystems, profiting from the joint infrastructure that was set-up especially for Antarctic Research. Together the departments have a long tradition in studying Antarctic marine ecology and biological oceanography.
