The Alfred Wegener Institute for Marine and Polar Research in the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres (AWI), established as a public foundation in 1980, is the leading German research institute in the field of polar and marine research. AWI includes the main establishment in Bremerhaven, the Potsdam Research Unit (1992), the Biological Institution on Helgoland and the Wadden Sea Station Sylt. The Institute has 780 employees and a total budget of 100 million Euro in 2005. The Alfred Wegener Institute conducts research in the Arctic, Antarctic and at temperate latitudes. It coordinates polar research in Germany and provides both necessary equipment and essential logistic back-up for polar expeditions. Recent additional research themes include North Sea research, contributions to marine biological monitoring, marine pollution research, investigation of naturally occurring marine substances and technical marine developments.
