The group at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA in Catalan) in the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) has as a main goal the study of environmental processes that interact with the climate system at large. A central perspective of this research is to assess the natural environmental variability so as to achieve a fuller understanding of the role of anthropogenic activities in perturbing the natural state. The group research focuses on biogeochemical, sedimentological and physical processes, with a notable emphasis on elemental cycling and particle fluxes in the marine environment in conjunction with global ocean circulation and the dynamics of the marine ecosystem. These studies are aimed at both the evolution of these processes through time as well as the current state. Working areas encompass open ocean regions, particularly the Polar Regions, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as lacustrine environments in Iberia and Eurasia.
