The Finnish Meteorological Institute is a public research and service institute under the auspices of the Ministry for Traffic and Communications, having about 450 employees. FMI is responsible for the national weather service, and also the leading meteorolgical and space research institute in Finland. Research is organized around for topical areas, which are: weather and public safety, the atmosphere and the quality of the environment, global change, and space research and planetary atmospheres.
