The Institute of Marine Research is an agency of the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs and carries out research on marine resources, the marine environment and aquaculture. Its range of activities focus primarily on the ecosystems of the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, the North Sea, and the Norwegian coastal zone. The principal objective of the Institute is to provide scientific advice to the Norwegian authorities, industry and society as a whole.
