The Institute for Polar Ecology (IPOE) was founded in in 1982 in order to combine the diverse research competence of Kiel University in polar regions. Its main objectives are the scientific investigation of marine and terrestrial ecosystems in both the Arctic and Antarctica and the academic education of graduate and postgraduate students of Kiel University. The current research agenda encompasses a broad range of topics, including microbial assemblages of polar soils, ecophysiological adaptations of polar macroalgae, as well as the dynamics of sea-ice and sea-floor biota in relation to the on-going climate change.
